Cold Chain Protects Polio Vaccines

Jun 23, 2023

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was exposed to the challenges of delivering vaccines globally. Even in regions with more sophisticated cold chain infrastructure, delivering deep frozen vaccines in volume posed challenges and required new solutions. The challenges were more significant in developing countries and those with remote regions.

The solutions developed to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine to all parts of the world are now used to safely deliver routine vaccines. Recently, the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO), the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and other Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners are ensuring teams can store, manage and distribute polio vaccines to the children of Mozambique using a high-quality cold chain system.
